Had you an artistic training? If yes, which one?

I’ve been studying animation for about five years now - one year at a school in Gent and almost four years here in Utrecht. The training involved mostly learning animation programs and making our own projects; all of my drawing skills are self-taught.

On your opinion, drawing is something innate or not?

Absolutely not- it’s something you teach yourself through practice. I read a really interesting theory the other day about people who have “natural talent.” For example, most Canadian hockey players that develop ambitious careers were the oldest kids in their class. The reason that they became so good is that they were older than the other kids, so they were stronger and smarter and more developed in their lives. Because they stood out against the other students in thier class, they were encouraged to join teams and became confident in their own skills. So what the theory suggests is that there are no naturally talented people, just people who have some kind of advantage over the rest, and because of this, they get more chances and opportunities to develop their skills and practice. I think the same counts for drawing.

Can you tell us about your artistic job? How did you finally come to do it?

I’m currently an animation student, so not working just quite yet.

And what about your artistic projects?

Right now I’m working on a school project. I’m doing research about animation in advertising and I hope to work with a company on creating a final animation. In the meantime I continue drawing and sketching in my free time.
